Cutting fuel cost on earthworks — idle time is the hidden line item

Telematics data across our hire fleet shows idle time running between twenty and thirty five percent of engine hours on typical civils sites. At current diesel prices that is a substantial monthly cost for work that produced no material movement at all.

The largest single cause is cycle mismatch — an excavator waiting for trucks, or trucks queueing at the loading face. Getting the truck-to-loader ratio right usually removes more idle time than any operator intervention.

Auto-idle and engine shutdown settings help, and every modern machine we hire out has them enabled by default. Shutting down during a fifteen minute wait saves fuel and, just as importantly, keeps engine hours off the meter you are being billed against.

Ask for the telematics report at the end of each hire period. Seeing idle percentage per machine alongside fuel burn tends to change site behaviour faster than any policy document.
